Spiner to helm 'Olvido'
MADRID -- Fernando Spiner, whose Gaucho Western "Aballay" walked away while using lion's share of kudos at Monday's Argentine Academy awards ceremony, will adapt another Argentine classic: "Mas alla del olvido." Argentina's foreign-language Oscar submission, "Aballay" changes a celebrated short story by Antonio Di Benedetto. Helmer-scribe Spiner's "Olvido" can be a remake in the Argentine movie of the title directed by Hugo del Carril in 1956. The amour fou tale has Del Carril becoming an Argentine ranch-owner stumbling in Paris upon a cabaret dancer who's an inactive ringer for his deceased wife. Taking her to Argentina, he tries to change her to the spitting picture of his former spouse. But tragedy strikes once more. "Del Carril might be the Orson Welles of Argentine cinema, a director, actor, producer, film author and music artist," mentioned Spiner. The 1956 "Olvido" changes 1892 novel "Bruges-la-Morte," by Belgium's Georges Rodenbach. Spiner mentioned it inspired 1954 French crime novel "The Living as well as the Dead," acquired by Alfred Hitchcock for your 1958 pic "Vertigo." "Olvido" is defined at Spiner's Buenos Aires label, Boya Films. Spiner aims to go in production late 2012, shooting in Argentina. On Monday, Spiner scooped eight Argentine Academy awards for "Aballay," including director, actress (Moro Anghileri), cinematography and modified script. Hammond: From Mess Tailor To Julia Roberts & Kaira Pitt, Oscar Talk Is Everywhere
‘Tis the growing season. Galleries and marketers are tugging out all of the stops tobring focus on their large honours challengers. The drumbeat continues to be so loudsince Thanksgiving it’snot uncommon to become asked to four to five sceenings, parties, occasions, and Q&As with just one evening. I recieve the sensation everybody ispushing a great deal harder this season than ever before beforebecause of relaxed pre-nomination Academy Of Movement Picture Arts & Sciences rules and also the feeling the race is available. With ballots due bySunday for LA Film Experts, Experts Choice, and Golden Globe honours,AFI Top Ten, yet others, the crush washeavy now. Witness Focus Features’push for Mess Tailor Soldier Spy. Gary Oldman and cast including Colin Firthand key crewhave experienced town doing one screening to another to packed Industry crowds for the kind of SAG, BAFTA, DGA guild honours. A publish-premiere party Tuesday evening came swarms of Academy people while Oldman and company held court. In a Sundaycocktail party attended by people from the La Film Experts, Hollywood Foreign Press Association, along with other groups, I went in to the film’s directorTomas Alfredson (Let The Correct One In) who's a new comer to the Hollywood honours scene but doesn’t appear irritated because of it. After I requested if he was upset by his very British film’s inexplicableloss towards the lower profile minor film Tyrannosaur at this day’s eccentricBritish Independent Film Honours, he stated, “I don’t think they consider Working Title and Universal too independent.”Still, the way a movie around the level ofTinker Tailor could lose to some dreary factor like Tyrannosaur is among the eccentricities of experts honours. Actually theTinker Tailor contingent is fairly thrilledabout their ownreviews and current 86% fresh score at Rotten Tomato plants as well as the industry reaction. In a KCET/American Cinematheque publish-screening Q&A Saturday, Oldman was presented witha career achievement Lumiere award. The actoris known forportrayingfar less restrainedcharacters. But hetold me playing George Smiley and walking in Alec Guiness’footsteps would be a career highlight and that he is wishing to complete another turn according to John LeCarre’s Smiley’s People. Mess Tailor opens within the U.S. today so box officeand possibly honours attention may figure for the reason that decision to visit forward with another Smiley project. Julia Roberts has been busy marketing her writing and directorial debut, the Bosnian war drama Within The Land of Bloodstream and Honey that is getting attention from news shows likeNightline, an hour, which Week With Christiane Amanpour. Jolie utilizes a virtually unknown cast of local stars and shot the film both in British and also the native Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian language – but it's delivering within the latter, filled with British subtitles. A minimum of for the time being.Thursday evening’s La premiere party at Boulevard 3 swarming withwell-wishers, Jolietold meshe wanted the pic to betrue towards the occasions that happened and did that which was perfect for the film. An HFPA officer in control ofeligibilityfor the Golden Globes confirmed in my experience that Jolie’smovie is going to be considered for his or her Best Language Film prize. Actually, if you didn't know who directed this movie, you may think it's the work of the great European auteur. It's not qualified, however, for that AcademyAwards’ Foreign Languagecategory because of more difficult rules. It's, obviously, qualified in regular groups for that Academy awards. One ofthe manyoffering congratulations was former Presidential candidate General Wesley Clark who introducedJolie to his boy, a budding filmmaker themself. Clark explained he thought the film, in regards to a war he understood perfectly, only agreed to be “incredible”. That’s the precise word Jolie’s proudfather, Jon Voight, also accustomed to describeher uncompromisingfilm which opens on December 23rd. GK Films and Film Districttoppers Graham King and Peter Schlessel also weresinging the star’s praises. I recommended to King he personally might be nominated within an unprecented 3 picture groups when in a few days’s Golden Globe nominations are revealed: Best Picture Drama for Hugo, Best Animated Feature for Rango, and finest Language Film for Within The Land Of Bloodstream And Honey. “Iwould be at liberty simply to acquire one,” he stated having a smile. Meanwhile, in another corner from the room stoodBrad Pitt, who could nab a few individuals nominations for themself for Moneyball and also the Tree of Existence. Pittseemed alternately intrigued and amused as wetalked aboutthe whole circus and strategiesof honours season. He couldn’t believe men much like me cover this thingyearround now. (“You should write a magazine inside a couple of years,”he chuckled.)He explained hewas happy about his award in the NY Film Experts as well as very happy with Jolie’s movie. The Academy’s relaxed rules mean the meals and wine are flowing at these screening/party occasions. And Academy people I've come across around the circuit appear to become taking pleasure in it more with galleries delivering the invites straight to them the very first time. You will find Q&As everywhere and, for the kind of The Iron Lady’s Meryl Streep and War Equine’s Steven Spielberg in only past week, they arewebcast live all over the world, too, to provide galleries the greatest bang for his or her campaign dollars. To date no webinars of thenumerous parties targeted at bringing in voters: such as the publish-screening fete for Drive Wednesdayat the Andaz Hotel around the Sunset Strip that came Supporting Actor hopeful Albert Brooks and Cannes-winning director Nicolas Winding Refn amongst others. Earlier that evening there is a packedreception at Spagofor china Language entry, The Flowers of War which had Academy and HFPA people interacting withdirector Zhang Yimou and stars Christian Bale and Ni Ni right before these needed to catch an airplane for that movie’s world premiere in Beijing. A number of individuals participants then headed to ICM for any special screening event of Cuba’s entry Habanasation located by Michael Moore which came Sean Penn amongst others to provide support. Meanwhile, Warner Bros was revealing its late-inning release, Very Noisy And Extremely Close, in an industry screening and reception in the La County Museum of Art, much like a celebration they did for J. Edgar there a couple of days earlier. To not be surpassed, Dreamworks did their industry screening of War Equine the evening before in the Academy. And every one of case a little sample of goings on on the circuit all week. This non-stop honours train is sufficient to drive you insane this time around of the year.

Is the One-Sheet for A Thousand Words Too Airbrushed, Or is Eddie Murphy Just 14 Years Old?
Either Eddie Murphy has a sprightly nephew named Eddie Murphy who is beginning a career in film, or the people behind A Thousand Words Photoshopped the bejesus out of the Eddie Murphy we already know and lament. The new one-sheet for the March release features a mysteriously youthful Velvet Jones gawking at the camera with eyes that look like Henson workshop appliques. One glance at this and James Brown would have a heart attack right in the hot tub. Make every word count, indeed! Here come six: Eddie, is that you under there? A Thousand Words stars Murphy as a “a fast-talking salesman who discovers that he only has a thousand words left to speak before he dies.” It costars people I care about like Kerry Washington and Allison Janney. Hopefully they remain recognizable. A Thousand Words Poster [MovieWeb] Follow Louis Virtel on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Daniel Tosh: Comic mines Internet for material
ToshWhat do pubescent boys and young men find funny? While much of Hollywood struggles to answer that question, Daniel Tosh seems to have cracked the riddle. With a blend of gross-out humor and politically incorrect jokes interspersed with Internet exhibitionism, the standup's "Tosh.0" enjoys the perch of Comedy Central's highest-rated show. It's no coincidence that the ascent of the weekly skein, which bowed in 2009 and now reaches 4 million viewers, mirrors the rise of YouTube, social networking and video blogging or vlogging. The Florida native spotlights the personalities behind the viral videos du jour, such as Australia artist Pricasso and his penis-etched creations.Meanwhile, the standup's special, "Daniel Tosh: Happy Thoughts," solidified his presence on Comedy Central, drawing 3.21 million for the network. The comic also keeps up a grueling live-act pace between L.A. standup and touring. Last year's "Tosh Tour Twenty Ten" sold more than 200,000 tickets and grossed nearly $7 million. He followed that up with this year's hot ticket, "Tosh Tour on Ice.""My standup is obviously still very much 'me' and my humor, but the tour is completely different," the press-shy comedian, who is recovering from quadruple hernia surgery, told the Santa Barbara Independent last year. Charlene Tilton, Steve Kanaly After I was lower in the Southfork Ranch last May for that tape of TNT's new Dallas pilot, I had been thrilled to determine two original cast people arrive for cameos inside a wedding scene, but with the action heading down throughout the heated wedding, Charlene Tilton's Lucy Ewing and Steve Kanaly's Ray Krebbs did not have enough time to provide up much greater than a couple of hugs and well-desires to the wedding couple. This is exactly why I am within the moon to are convinced that both stars happen to be asked revisit Southfork for an additional family gathering within the new series' 4th episode. For individuals individuals who require a refresher on Dallas 101,Lucy may be the daughter of Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and J.R.Ewing's(Ray Hagman) brother, Gary, who fled Dallas with wife Valene for that sun and scandal of Knots Landing, California. Jay Duplass on Jeff Who Lives at Home, Austin's Slacker Savants and the Duplass Secret to Success
comments: 0 || add yours For Mark and Jay Duplass, the sibling team behind The Puffy Chair, Baghead, and last year’s Cyrus, success came only after years of frustration — and only by happy accident. “All we were doing in the late ’90s, in our twenties, was trying to be the Coen brothers,” Jay Duplass laughed to Movieline, “and failing at that, because the Coen brothers are awesome and they’re already the Coen brothers.” It was only when the brothers Duplass stopped trying so hard, at the end of their creative rope and after years of fruitless attempts, that they found the formula for personal filmmaking that would become their signature. After releasing their 2008 indie horror Baghead, the Duplasses ventured into studio territory with 2010’s Cyrus, their first mainstream venture with studio backing (courtesy of Fox Searchlight) and name actors (Jonah Hill, John C. Reilly, and Marisa Tomei); next March, Paramount Vantage will release the slacker comedy Jeff Who Lives at Home, starring Jason Segel and Ed Helms. But, as Duplass explained via phone from the Savannah Film Festival, where he and his brother received the Cinevation Award for “imagination, inspiration and innovation in cinema,” they haven’t deviated from the indie spirit with which they work — they just select their projects, and their collaborators, more carefully. Read on for more with Jay Duplass on accidentally discovering his method (after years of post-film school frustration), why famous actors want to work with him and brother Mark, the security in having Sundance as a fall back plan, the Austin-area slacker savants who inspired Jeff Who Lives at Home, and the current status of the next Duplass release, the back-to-indie-roots sibling comedy The Do-Deca-Pentathlon. Jeff Who Lives at Home plays tonight and tomorrow at AFI Fest in Los Angeles. The award you’re receiving in Savannah isn’t just any award — it honors “imagination, innovation, and inspiration” in filmmaking. What does that represent to you? I can’t believe it… honestly, it’s very surreal, it’s thrilling, and it’s very hard to believe, honestly. You know, I didn’t make a decent movie until I was 30 years old, and that was a seven-minute movie that cost $3. I think it’s mainly because I went to film school, I tried really hard to be innovative and be interesting and be riveting and shit, you know, and my brother and I always wanted this stuff — but really, all we were doing in the late ’90s, in our twenties, was trying to be the Coen brothers. [Laughs] And failing at that, because the Coen brothers are awesome and they’re already the Coen brothers. It might be a good idea not to try to be them, they already have that down pretty good. How did you get from that to where you are now? What ended up happening is, we ended up kind of just really losing it. Me in particular, in my late-20s, just kind of feeling like approaching 30: I have to get a real job, it sucks, I’ve been working on this for over a decade, I haven’t made anything that I can say is even worth watching. And basically, in the basement of that awful time period, which lasted a couple of years, my brother said, “We’re going to make a movie today.” This was when digital cameras were first coming out. We made this movie this one day in Austin called This is John with our parents’ video camera, where Mark acted in it and I shot it. It was like how we used to do it when we were kids. We made this movie, basically, about a guy who’s trying to perfect the personal greeting on his answering machine and fails to do so, so much to the point that he’s about to have a nervous breakdown, which is basically something that had happened to me a month before. It was the first time that we made a movie about what we go through in life. And it was literally just like, this happened to me, it’s fucking totally embarrassing and tragic, but it made us giggle. So my brother improvised it and I shot it and we cut it together, and it went to Sundance and got written up as this innovative, groundbreaking film. [Laughs] Which is what we were trying to do the whole time before, but we were just doing derivative shit! The first time we actually winged something, and did something deeply personal, they called it innovative and groundbreaking and all this stuff. So that’s why I say that it’s so surreal and counterintuitive to me, because we’re not trying to be groundbreaking. We’re just trying to not make something that sucks. And I honestly feel like that is still what we’re trying to do. I know from talking to press now that we’re doing deeply personal stuff. That seems like a great revelation to have as an artist — that what actually works is doing things your own way and telling personal stories. Do you feel like that negates all those years of going to film school, all that stuff — could you have accomplished this at 20 if you had just let go and done things this way? I doubt it. Because it wasn’t a realization; it was an accident. It took me getting pounded down into nothing, and us having no money just picking up a camera saying, let’s just see if we can make something that doesn’t suck at this point. I really believe it had to happen this way. Or, it didn’t have to happen this way but this is the way it happened, you know? It’s only by talking about it in retrospect that we realize how it happened and why we did it. For us it was just the willingness to put our heads down and keep doing it. The struggling filmmakers of the world will be happy to hear that, I’m sure. Your work together with Mark is known for a consistent style, not only in your cinematic sensibility but in your process. Does this revelation give you more confidence in the way you work? Has it been easy to stick to your guns as you work more and more with studios? No, it wasn’t easy to transition. It just took a lot of steadfastness and a lot of conversations, honestly. Just a lot of care. Because a lot of people have this strange idea that we made Puffy Chair, we made Baghead, and then we just switched and did a studio film. But the reality is that after we made Puffy Chair we got tons and tons of meetings in L.A. because people wanted to take what we were doing and make it in the studio setting. That was 2005, when we premiered Puffy Chair at Sundance, and we didn’t release Cyrus until 2010. We developed a bunch of different projects during that time at different studios and it took basically five years, and Fox Searchlight, to feel comfortable enough to know that we were going to be able to make a movie and it wasn’t going to suck. We had other opportunities but we were going to be working in such crunched, or constricted, environments that we felt scared that we weren’t going to be able to do and offer what we thought we had to offer. So it was a very careful process, even hiring crew people on Cyrus; we interviewed everyone ourselves, which people don’t do, because we wanted to make sure people had the right intentions and the right vibes. Everyone had to like what we were doing before, because we don’t assume that everyone’s going to like our movies. They’re very specific, and we work in an unorthodox way. If people aren’t excited about what they’re making we don’t want it to be a drag for them, and consequently a drag on our process. We don’t really work in a framework of hostility and war, which most film sets are in my experience. We’re making movies about subtle, personal things and if the sets aren’t calm we feel like the subtle things can get lost. You two are a unique case in that regard. We’re just careful, because for us it’s not just about making a movie. We’re also lucky in the sense that we can always go and make a $50,000 movie and if it doesn’t suck we can sell it at Sundance for a lot more than that. So we rest very easy in our ability to make independent film, and not only that, we’ve really been fortunate and lucky that movie stars like what we do. We get a lot of phone calls and emails and messages from movie stars who are basically saying, ‘I don’t know what the hell y’all are doing over there but I like it and I want to be in it. And I’ll sleep on your sofa.’ For us that’s been very empowering to know. Because that’s where the real power lies, with distributing films: Having famous people in your movies, for better or for worse. But there’s a great advantage to it. When we’re on set it’s hard, what we do with actors is very painstaking and there’s a lot of chaos and a lot of confusion involved. [Laughs] What we have to go through to get what we get. But the upside of that is that people seem to be pretty attracted to acting in our movies. It probably allows actors to exercise muscles, and in different ways, than they do on more traditional sets. Yeah, and they get to have real moments. They get to do a whole scene all at once, which never happens, and to have a real moment with someone. It’s almost like being in a play, but it’s even better because it doesn’t have to be that controlled. You can let it rip and see what happens and if it doesn’t work out you can do it again. I think it’s a pretty rewarding, and exhausting, way to work. You filmed The Do-Deca-Pentathlon before Jeff Who Lives at Home, but we’ll see Jeff in theaters first. Why is that? The Do-Deca-Pentathlon we actually filmed before Cyrus. And right when we started editing Cyrus we got the greenlight from Fox Searchlight , because we had been developing all kinds of stuff and they weren’t going and it wasn’t ready, so we made Baghead, then we made The Do-Deca-Pentathlon, too. We got greenlit and we brought all of our crew over to Cyrus, and that included our editors. And everyone was thrilled because we were actually going to get paid real money for the first time. So we made Cyrus and we released it, and we got greenlit for Jeff Who Lives at Home immediately, which is the luckiest and most amazing thing in the world. So we made Jeff Who Lives at Home and when we finished editing Jeff we started back on The Do-Deca-Pentathon and we’re actually fine-cutting it this fall. When will it be released? I don’t know. I think it will be released sometime after March, because Jeff is released March 2. You mentioned being confident that you could always take a smaller movie to Sundance, so there’s a degree of security at least in that option. Definitely. And you know, we’ve always tried to remember to make movies, not meetings. So many of our friends have gotten caught up in developing something for six years and then they wake up like, “Shit, we haven’t made a movie in half a decade.” That’s crazy. In Jeff Who Lives at Home, Jason Segel plays a slacker hero-basement dweller, which brings to mind the Japanese phenomenon of hikikomori — grown single men who still live at home, a total psycho-social phenomenon. What’s behind Jeff’s psyche in your film? Well the movie is kind of inspired by us living in Austin, Texas and going to school there and watching a lot of really smart dudes kind of transfer out of academia into basements and efficiencies around Austin, Texas, engaging in philosophical thought and the nature of the universe, destiny, and their part in it all… and also potentially smoking some marijuana while doing that. A lot of people look at those dudes and call them stoner or slacker or laugh at them, and we do that too. But also, if you have breakfast with those dudes at like 7pm at a diner when they’re wearing their cargo shorts, you realize how intensely thoughtful they are and how conscientious they can be, and honestly, how idealistic and hopeful and radical they are, too. Mark and I are at the same time amazed, but also their lives are kind of sad and tragic. But they’re exciting and they’re exciting to talk to, and there’s that hopefulness there. So that’s what the movie’s about. It’s about one of these guys going out into the world and actually interacting with the universe, when his thoughts about his destiny begin to interact with the real world. That’s just exciting to us. Talk about perfect casting — how did Jason Segel get involved? We had known him a little bit socially, and Jason Reitman as a producer was involved. We were talking about how he’s kind of the perfect person to play this part. He read the script and just loved it, and we talked over dinner and knew we were going to make the movie. 'Assassin's Creed' Movie Deal Leaves Hollywood 'Flabbergasted'
Hollywood and the videogame industry have a rocky relationship. Years ago, when gaming was still in its infancy, developers would have given anything to have their title adapted into a film franchise. That eventually did happen, thanks to "Super Mario Bros." in the early '90s, but the film was well, it's absolute garbage. Unfortunately, the tradition of poor videogame adaptations has continued with almost complete certainty since then, leaving both film and game audiences wary of the industry's attempts to cross that digital divide. Ubisoft is trying something different with "Assassin's Creed." The game publisher is retaining abnormal amounts of creative control over the mega-franchise's jump to the big screen; a move that has some Hollywood insiders claiming that the picture will never see the light of day. According to Vulture, the film industry is "flabbergasted" at the level of control maintained by Ubisoft in their deal to bring "Assassin's Creed" to theaters with Sony Pictures. After speculation that other studios like DreamWorks or Universal might land the title, Sony has won out. Given reports that Ubisoft has rights to casting, script, and even release date, one can imagine Sony's willingness to part with control likely assisted in the agreement. Honestly, it should come as no surprise that Ubisoft made such demands. Back in May, the company formed their own film division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, with the aim of keeping their popular game franchises' adaptations in their own hands. "We want to keep ownership, retain control over the film content, and we're open to work with studios on the development of our projects, and eventually collaborate on the pre-casting, pre-budget and script," Ubisoft's Jean-Julian Baronnet said earlier this year. Why should anyone in Hollywood be "flabbergasted" by the concept of a game publisher wishing to maintain consistency with their brand? Certainly, if the film industry had a wonderful track record of converting videogames to the big screen there would be no issue. Unfortunately, that isn't the case, and one need look no further than the bumbling portfolio of Uwe Boll ("Bloodrayne," "Far Cry") to understand why Ubisoft wants to hold creative restraint on their products. The game industry doesn't quite have the stars in its eyes like it did back in the days before "Super Mario Bros." Videogames are now a $74 billion industry, giving movies a run for their money in control of the entertainment media market, and there is the very genuine question as to whether or not game publishers really need film adaptations. A talent agent told Vulture that the restrictions upon Sony meant the film will "never get made." Of course, if getting the film made means another ham-fisted Hollywood adaptation, gamers may just be better off without it. Tell us what you think in the comments section and on Twitter!

TV Ratings: 'Chuck' Return Hampered By World Series, 'Grimm' Has Good Premiere
NBC"Chuck" It was baseball that was at the top of the list for television viewers -- and it showed in the ratings. The final game of the World Series, which crowned the National League's St. Louis Cardinals as this year's champions after the team handily beat the Texas Rangers 6-2, averaged 23.2 million total viewers in primetime for Fox, according to preliminary numbers. (Finals for the game will be in later.) In the all-important 18-49 demographic, Game 7 posted a 6.8 rating. Fox easily took home the victory. PHOTOS: Fall TV Death Pool: Which New Shows Will Be Axed? That didn't prove helpful for NBC, which opted to move forward with its two premieres, Chuck and Grimm, but the latter performed better than expected in the ratings. Meanwhile, Fox pushed Fringe's return back one more week and CBS pulled its Friday dramas from the schedule at the last minute, airing reruns for the night instead. The start of Chuck's final sason was the series' lowest to date; at 8 p.m., the hourlong drew 3.4 million and posted just a 1.0 rating in 18-49. Ratings could grow next week, without baseball breathing down its neck. Offering the full Grimm pilot and a country-wide screening tour before last night's premiere may have been factors in the new fairy tale procedural's solid start following a weak lead-in. PHOTOS: 10 Shows Canceled Faster Than 'The Playboy Club' The new series surprised, averaging 6.5 million and a 2.1 rating in the demo, against heavy sports competition. Grimm was the top-rated non-sports telecast on any network since December, NBC notes. What's even more impressive is that the genre show had an uphill climb in a tough time slot (next week, it will also go up against Fringe, in addition to Supernatural and CSI: NY), but ended up performing better than some of the network's higher-profile projects like The Playboy Club. Dateline (4.7 million, 1.3) aired at 10 p.m. The CW, which proved Thursday that it could grow its audience even against the World Series, aired originals of Nikita (1.8 million, 0.6) and Supernatural (1.7 million, 0.7) -- both dramas remaining steady. ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (4.2 million, 1.1) settled into its new home, followed by 20/20 (5.2 million, 1.2). Following Fox was NBC, which averaged a 1.5 rating. ABC and CBS tied on the night with a 1.1 with the CW trailing with a 0.7. “The rumors are true,” a North Carolina TV station announced when the governor flew to the hometown movie studio to break the news this past week. “Tony Stark and the third installment of the Iron Man movie franchise will fly into Wilmington.” Great news for North Carolina maybe but for the Los Angeles movie and TV community it felt like a punch in the gut. Thanks to the state’s generous 25% production credit, North Carolina’s EUE/Screen Gems Studios sealed the deal. Manhattan Beach-based Marvel Studios considered making the third movie in Los Angeles just like the first two, but the 25% credit proved too hard to resist. California has a 25% credit which excludes big budget studio productions. Marvel also considered Michigan and New Mexico but North Carolina won out because of the size of the facility as well as the tax credit. “We aggressively pursued this piece of business,” said EUE/Screen Gems Co-Owner and COO Chris Cooney. “We negotiated hard, and it paid off.” EVP Bill Vassar pointed out that in addition to Screen Gems’ 10 sound stages the area has a large local crew base with experience handling five productions simultaneously. Iron Man 3 is expected to pump about $80 million into the local economy. “This is a great day for North Carolina,” Gov. Bev Perdue boasted. Not so great for Los Angeles, though. “Five-hundred-fifty jobs, all the other sub-jobs, the construction jobs, that’s what it’s all about to us here locally.” In addition to Iron Man 3, Perdue cited Hunger Games and a lot of other movies and TV work currently and recently all over North Carolina. “The film tax credit made a real difference.” Too make matters worse, at a time when many other states, not just North Carolina, are aggressively pursuing location shoots, California’s tax credit program was extended after only one year because the Legislature didn’t think the financially strapped state could afford originally proposed five-year version. L.A. wasn’t the only city that got this kind of news recently. NBC Sports announced that it was moving out of its longtime home at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan about 35 miles away to Stamford, Conn., to take advantage of tax incentives. Connecticut offers tax credits from 10% up to 30% depending on a production’s budget. Iron Man 3, which North Carolina officials say will be the state’s biggest production yet, is expected to set up shop in Wilmington for about 10 months starting after the first of the year.

Immortals Featurette Online
Check out that Henry CavillHe's Zack Snyder's ManOf Steel, but before he dons the blue tights, you can get a taster of Henry Cavill, Action Man, in Immortals. That's the fast-approaching Greek god epic from Tarsem in which he plays the under-dressed but over-achieving Theseus. And here's a featurette all about the character! The film features a war involving the GreekGods - played here by the likes of Luke Evans, Kellan Lutz, Isabel Lucas and Corey Sevier - and a king with ambitions to take over the world, Hyperion (MickeyRourke). Caught in the middle is Freida Pinto's soothsayer Phaedra and, of course,Cavill's demi-god Theseus, chosen to lead the fight back.Immortals is out on November 11. Given that Tarsem made the slightly barmy but utterly ravishing likes of The Cell and (in particular) The Fall before, we're expecting something gorgeous.

Haywire Poster Fights Online
Steven Soderbergh's MMA action epic!Hot on the heels of Contagion comes the other film Steven Soderbergh made this year (not counting his second-unit work on The Hunger Games). Haywire is the action vehicle Soderbergh built around Mixed Martial Arts star Gina Carano. You can't really recognise her in the poster that's just arrived, but it's still pretty damn cool. Although without the gun, the activity she's engaged in here might possibly be misconstrued..."Haywire has a bit of our special sauce in it," Soderbergh told Empire recently. "I'd like to think that even when we make things that are supposed to be straightforwardly entertaining, there are some other aspects that keep them from being disposable. It was great fun, because it required a different skill-set than I'm used to. I hadn't shot fights like this before, so I had to educate myself."Gina is a natural athlete and she really delivered in some brutal fights, but for all that, I think my favourite scene in the movie is a foot-chase in Barcelona. I could watch her run forever. We've also got a very odd little car chase, and some cat-and-mouse in a house where the lights go out. We didn't really have enough money to blow anything up though!"Alongside Carano, Haywire (the movie formerly known as Knockout) stars Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton and Channing Tatum. Lem Dobbs wrote the screenplay, and it's out in the UK on January 20. Contagion arrives on October 21.
HBO Grabs Soderbegh's Liberace Film
Damon and Douglas still attachedSteven Soderbergh's project about the life of OTT musician Liberace has been in development for ages now. But the trajectory of the film has just taken an unexpected direction, with US cable channel spin-off HBO Films stepping up to make it, retaining stars Matt Damon and Michael Douglas.Richard LaGravenese is behind the script, which is now called Behind the Candelabra. The plot, as it has been all along, will chronicle the relationship between the entertainer (Douglas) and his younger live-in lover Scott Thorson (Damon)."This is a story that's going to surprise a lot of people," HBO Films president Len Amato said in a statement picked up by The Hollywood Reporter. "It's funny, heartbreaking and always fascinating, and we are delighted that Jerry (Weintraub) and Steven brought the film to HBO. With Steven at the helm, directing such accomplished actors as Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, this is a dream project for us."It might seem surprising for a film that had long been planned as a cinematic release to suddenly make the move to TV, but Soderbergh seems happy: "From the inception of this project, we've had two priorities: getting it right creatively, and getting as many people as possible to see it." The director plans to kick off shooting next July in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Palm Springs.
The Simpsons Executive Producer Al Jean on How the Show Was Saved
The Simpsons Mmmmm... contract renewal. Things were looking grim a week ago for The Simpsons, as the possibility loomed that a new deal between the voice actors and 20th Century Fox TV might not happen. Now, with a new pact in place and a 24th and 25th season secure, The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean tells TV Guide Magazine that the negotiations had actually been going on for months without resolve. Things began to turn around last week after he and fellow executive producers Matt Groening and James L. Brooks sat down with the stars."I was always cautiously optimistic," Jean says. "I work for Fox but I represent the show, and I love the cast, so I don't get involved until the very end where we say, 'OK there will be a deal or not a deal, it's not up to me but I hope there is.' When we talked to the cast at that point I was very optimistic; it was very clear to me how much they loved the show and how much they wanted to continue to do it."Even though the deals are between 20th Century Fox TV and the actors, Brooks has been known to smooth things between both sides in the past - and his attorney, Sam Fischer, has occasionally stepped in to resolve stalemates during previous standoffs.Jean won't divulge specifics of how this negotiation turned around (the actors had wanted a piece of the show's back-end profits, but 20th Century Fox TV made it clear that wasn't an option), but says, "It's always helpful to have two powerful guys, Jim and Matt; they want the show to continue but want it to be a good show. Their motives are clear."Now, even though it's been speculated that the 25th season might be The Simpsons' last, Jean says there's no reason to believe the show won't continue long beyond that. He also gives some insight into when fans can expect a second Simpsons movie in theaters.TV Guide Magazine: It was a week of uncertainty, but it led up to this being resolved rather quickly. Walk me through what happened. Was there was a moment where you thought maybe this was all over?Al Jean: It was definitely serious in that we would not have been brought back at the same amount the show now costs. Fox had actually come to us months ago with an analysis basically saying, DVD sales are less, foreign revenues are less, and we're a really expensive show. They said, "This is what we have to get the budget down to," and this was shared with the cast some time ago. And it just became public a week ago, and that's when everything turned from a "negotiation" to an "impasse." We got mislabeled by the reporting. One thing that was really untrue, it was never discussed to do just one more year. It was always going to either end, or do at least two more years. In terms of the mortality of the show, I wound up being in a bad car accident on Thursday, although I'm fine. But when you go through that, you're not going, "I'm thinking about the mortality of The Simpsons." You're just glad you're alive. Yeah, there's a chance The Simpsons could have ended, but it didn't, because we value every person's contribution, especially the cast, and we also love the show and want to keep doing it.TV Guide Magazine: The Simpsons renegotiations generally happen in the spring. Why did this all go down right now?Jean: The network said, either we get a deal where we're set, or we will just announce that we're going off the air. We would have prepared an ending for the show, which we still needed time to do, even though it would have been a year from now.TV Guide Magazine: The idea of recasting the roles wasn't an option this time (like it was during an earlier renegotiation more than a decade ago). Why was that not on the table?Jean: Every negotiation I've ever been involved in, it hasn't been an option. These actors are these characters. There's no reason to give people less than what you've grown to love over 23 years.TV Guide Magazine: When these studies started showing up illustrating how News Corp. stood to make even more money once The Simpsons went off the air, did that give you pause at all? Jean: This is one of those things they told us six months ago. This was told to the cast and everyone involved. By the way, I should say there are other budget cuts and have been other budget cuts in the past couple of years because of this. I think the Fox network and the studio, they were really trying to find a way to keep the show going. I believed them when they said the show had gotten too expensive that it no longer made financial sense at the level we were at. But they still loved the show and wanted to continue it.TV Guide Magazine: Even though it might have been more profitable to shut it down?Jean: That was a real debate. It's a big company, and there are definitely people whose interests would have been better served by ending it. Those interests were superceded because we're still valuable to the network in terms of our ratings. We still double our lead-in every Sunday.TV Guide Magazine: Among the budget cuts were a reduction in salary for the producers. Can you talk to where else things were trimmed?Jean: They're all over the budget. We don't like to talk about specific areas or specific people's salaries. But everything involved in the show, from the animation and the post-production to the writing, yes. But this is the world we live in. Everyone involved, especially me, believes this is a terrific place to work. There are so many economic difficulties that people face now, I would never complain about anything we're having to do.TV Guide Magazine: As animation production has changed, were you able to find some efficiencies there?Jean: Digital animation (has helped). There are initial startup costs, but in the long run it's less expensive. I hate to say "cheaper animation" because I think it looks better than it ever has, but in some cases money was saved... With computers you're able to realize different savings as you continue to refine the method. There was a big cost incurred for switching to high def, but now that we're in high def we can realize some savings too.TV Guide Magazine: When Harry Shearer put out his statement on Friday, what was the reaction, and did it help move a deal along?Jean: The only comment I would make is that the actors are very valuable and deserve to participate in the success of the show. I agree with both of those statements. The negotiation determines in what way that happens. We would never do a show without them. I think everyone who has worked here for a while [has] certainly done quite well by The Simpsons, and everyone is grateful for it. We're going to move on now and settle the NBA strike.TV Guide Magazine: Maybe you can resolve Michael C. Hall's contract negotiations for Dexter.Jean: We actually have a little homage to Dexter in our Halloween show coming on October 30. And we're really proud that our Halloween episode airs before Halloween this year.TV Guide Magazine: When the two-year renewal came out, we couldn't help but notice how it brings us right to that nice 25-year number. What is your sense of whether The Simpsons will end after that?Jean: Nobody can predict what the future holds. But the fact that we got the costs down is, in my view, a very big hope that we can continue beyond those two seasons. They never said, "We want to end it." They said, "We want to find a way so that it can continue into the future."TV Guide Magazine: So 30 years?Jean: I'm so optimistic I'm upping it to 50 years now.TV Guide Magazine: You guys are getting close to Gunsmoke's 635-episode record. Is that something to aspire to?Jean: A little bit, but honestly, you don't do this just to break records. You do it because you think you can still do funny shows. We just had a table read of next year's Halloween episode, which went great. You go to these reads and see how funny it is, and the cast being great, and you say to yourself, "This is why we want to keep doing this."TV Guide Magazine: Plus, these days, even when you go off the air, there's opportunity to revive these franchises down the road, like Futurama or Family Guy.Jean: So extrapolating that, we'll be on the air 75 years. Animation is evergreen. I've given up trying to forecast it. I would just say, don't bet against us. We really kill ourselves to try and keep the show funny and current.TV Guide Magazine: Can you really do a final episode of The Simpsons? That seems like a tall order.Jean: We've done episodes of The Simpsons that would have been great final episodes, like the one where Elizabeth Taylor was Maggie's voice in Season Four. But we're not going to say, "Watch this last episode and the meaning of life will be revealed." Sometimes shows put themselves in a box by trying to promise that. We know a lot of things we want our last episode not to be. What we do want it to be is sweet, true to the show and funny.TV Guide Magazine: Is there ever a point where you revisit a spin-off? There hasn't been talk of one since the plans to do a live-action Krusty the Clown show was scrapped in 1994.Jean: That was the only one that got close. In my view, if you start diluting that universe you start losing something.TV Guide Magazine: And now that this is out of the way, we can get back to asking you about a second Simpsons movie.Jean: Oh, come on! I've always been of the view that if we ever did a second movie, which would be exciting, it would be whenever the run of the show ended. So I guess the news is a Simpsons movie has been pushed back another two years at least.TV Guide Magazine: You're always working ahead of the game, keeping some episodes left over for the following year. Had a deal not closed, when would you have run out of fresh episodes?Jean: Season 23 would have been the last recorded season, the new episodes would have aired through December 2012, in accordance with the end of the world according to the Mayan Calendar. I guess we beat the prophecy.Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

New Academy Museum Could Feature Oscar on its Historic Facade
Double size and half the fundraising event burden.our editor recommendsMotion Picture Academy Takes Answer to Create Museum in Former May Co. Department StoreInside the Oscar Museum's Past Troubles and Uncertain Future People will be the rough metrics in the Academy of motion Picture Arts and Sciences' plan to open a museum inside the former May Co. building round the La County Museum of Art campus -- instead of inside a Hollywood property that the business made the decision to create a $400 million project. The museum could open within three years -- plus it may even come with an picture of Oscar etched round the building's distinctive gold cylinder. It may be operated by AMPAS within extended-term lease agreement with LACMA, according to Academy leader Tom Sherak, who spoke while using Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday. "The fact we don't have this in L.A. -- home of the film -- we must change that," he mentioned. STORY:Inside the Oscar Museum's Past Troubles and Uncertain Future The Academy's board of governors on Tuesday evening grew to become an associate of the LACMA options by tallying to sign a memorandum of understanding to use in good belief to find out a movie museum inside the 300,000-square-ft former mall building, that's situated at 6067 Wilshire Blvd. round the western side of the LACMA campus inside the Miracle Mile district. The memo makes way for your two organizations to talk about the following contract as well as the Academy, which produces the large the majority of its revenue in purchasing broadcast rights for the Oscars show,to develop fundraising event plans. But several questions remain: Sherak did not offer specifics round the terms or entire lease the Academy would sign with LACMA, except to convey, "I won't be around if this lease is finished. In . Even though he did not divulge the thought cost from the project -- that may take as extended as five years to complete -- Sherak mentioned AMPAS "will just raise half of that which you needed to boostInch for your now-scuttled Hollywood museum development on Vine Street. "We are beginning the fundraising event campaign now which determines how rapidly this building increases," mentioned Academy Boss Beginning Hudson. AMPAS would retain autonomy total areas of the museum, while based on LACMA's understanding of museum management and construction, Hudson mentioned. The first sort mall, built-within the Streamline Moderne style, opened up up in 1939 LACMA acquired it in 1994 and re-referred to it as LACMA West. The May Co. structure is famous for that gold cylinder that comprises a few of their facade, that's been designated historic with the city's Cultural Heritage Commission. LACMA Boss Michael Govan mentioned that there's been discussions regarding the potential for integrating the legendary Oscar statuette into the round part of the building's facade. "It absolutely was just screaming being an Oscar," mentioned Govan, adding that might be techniques to change that part of the building "that could be consistent with its historic designation." In line with the La Conservancy, the city's Office of Historic Assets would review any recommended changes for the cylinder. STORY: Film Academy Takes Answer to Create Museum in Former May Co. Mall Despite its new direction, the Academy still expects to spread out exhibition space within the Vine Street property it once imagined as home of a movie museum, though its extended-term plans for your property are unclear. "The primary one factor we won't do -- the Academy will not do as well as the board will not ensure it is accomplished -- we won't abandon this website,In . Sherak mentioned. Nevertheless the new LACMA plan marks a substantial alternation in AMPAS' previous movie museum efforts which is a blow to Hollywood stakeholders who had wanted a movie museum would help in the continuing revitalization in the area. The Academy had extended planned to create a 144,000-square-ft development on Hollywood property it began acquiring in 2005 in the expense up to $50 million. French architect Christian p Portzamparcdesigned a sleek, modern edifice, but merely before a considerable fundraising event campaign may have begun, the project was derailed with the economic collapse that began in serious in fall 2008. The 3.5-acre site, that's situated across from ArcLight Cinemas on Vine, has sitting vacant for several years in August area stakeholders told THR it had become an eyesore. Sherak mentioned the Academystill expects to produce an exhibit space inside the structures to start and there is been discussion about hosting periodic outdoors tests. The Academy has began razing some structures and washing the home, that's alongside its Pickford Center for Film Study. "I'm glad to look for the museum is continue which AMPAS is firmly dedicated to buying and selling in and developing its Hollywood property near Sunset [Boulevard] and Vine. The entertainment industry has extended been necessary to our local economy and carried out a considerable role inside our global culture," La City Council Leader Eric Garcetti mentioned. "AMPAS' new assets will celebrate that background go to existence for future decades." But Sherak mentioned he wasn't sure how a property might be used once the movie museum opens, though he suggested that potential features for instance an outdoors theater could remain getting used once the museum opens. "Why would that needs to disappear to maintain it? It need not disappear. So there are many planning that needs to be done," he mentioned. STORY: Beginning Hudson: Job as Academy Boss Offers 'Global Platform' on her behalf Adoration for Film Sherak mentioned that discussions with LACMA began informally in spring 2010, and were initially headed by former Academy leader Sid Ganis, who met with Govan and spoken about the requirement of an AMPAS museum. "We spoken about how precisely sad it absolutely was this had less than attracted itself together yet," Govan mentioned. Talks increased being worse once Hudson was named the completely new Boss in the Academy in April. Sherak mentioned that inside a June 1 AMPAS board of governors meeting, Hudson, former mind of Film Independent, homed in round the potential project. "Without warning it absolutely was being an arrow for the bull's-eye. Next factor I realize, Michael and he or she were speaking which we stood a committee develop,Inch Sherak mentioned. The LACMA campus remains substantially transformed through the final half-decade by using two new structures. In 2008, the museum opened up in the Broad Contemporary Art Museum and a year ago the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Exhibition Pavilion put open its entrance doors. Incorporated inside a 3-phase plan, the May Co. building wound up being to will also be refurbished. However, Govan mentioned that Metropolitan Transportation Authority's plan to build the Westside Subway Extension, which might add a go to a corner of Wilshire and Fairfax, triggered LACMA to re-think its plan. "We paused and mentioned, 'that is an extremely important building plus it ought to have something fantastic within it,AInch Govan mentioned. "It should be a destination within it of itself. This could become again, since it was, most likely the favourite structures in La. We are very happy to move our plans around along with other spaces." The objective museum might be probably the most effective signal so far that LACMA needs to boost its connections for the movie business. Taken LACMA introduced it might reboot its film-screening program this fall. It's produced a partnership with Film Independent, the crowd behind the Spirit Honours as well as the La Film Festival, and contains hired film critic Elvis Mitchell as curator. STORY: Academy Taps Beginning Hudson, Ric Robertson to switch Bruce Davis "LACMA is certainly an eclectic museum with many different collections in a number of different areas -- film seems as being a slam dunk," mentioned Terry Semel, co-chair in the LACMA board of trustees and former chairman of Warner Bros. The museum's board now features a slew of entertainment business players, including Willow Bay, John Grazer, Michael Lynton, Carole Bayer Sager, Barbra Streisand and Steve Tisch. And also on Monday it absolutely was introduced that CAA partner Bryan Lourd is joining the 64-member board. Also, in September, LACMA introduced that it's inaugural Art + Film Gala -- slated being held November. 5 -- will recognition Clint Eastwood and conceptual artist John Baldessari. The gala is meant only to boost funds to assist LACMA's "initiative to produce film more central for the museum's curatorial programming," the museum mentioned in the news release.
