TV Ratings: 'Chuck' Return Hampered By World Series, 'Grimm' Has Good Premiere
NBC"Chuck" It was baseball that was at the top of the list for television viewers -- and it showed in the ratings. The final game of the World Series, which crowned the National League's St. Louis Cardinals as this year's champions after the team handily beat the Texas Rangers 6-2, averaged 23.2 million total viewers in primetime for Fox, according to preliminary numbers. (Finals for the game will be in later.) In the all-important 18-49 demographic, Game 7 posted a 6.8 rating. Fox easily took home the victory. PHOTOS: Fall TV Death Pool: Which New Shows Will Be Axed? That didn't prove helpful for NBC, which opted to move forward with its two premieres, Chuck and Grimm, but the latter performed better than expected in the ratings. Meanwhile, Fox pushed Fringe's return back one more week and CBS pulled its Friday dramas from the schedule at the last minute, airing reruns for the night instead. The start of Chuck's final sason was the series' lowest to date; at 8 p.m., the hourlong drew 3.4 million and posted just a 1.0 rating in 18-49. Ratings could grow next week, without baseball breathing down its neck. Offering the full Grimm pilot and a country-wide screening tour before last night's premiere may have been factors in the new fairy tale procedural's solid start following a weak lead-in. PHOTOS: 10 Shows Canceled Faster Than 'The Playboy Club' The new series surprised, averaging 6.5 million and a 2.1 rating in the demo, against heavy sports competition. Grimm was the top-rated non-sports telecast on any network since December, NBC notes. What's even more impressive is that the genre show had an uphill climb in a tough time slot (next week, it will also go up against Fringe, in addition to Supernatural and CSI: NY), but ended up performing better than some of the network's higher-profile projects like The Playboy Club. Dateline (4.7 million, 1.3) aired at 10 p.m. The CW, which proved Thursday that it could grow its audience even against the World Series, aired originals of Nikita (1.8 million, 0.6) and Supernatural (1.7 million, 0.7) -- both dramas remaining steady. ABC's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (4.2 million, 1.1) settled into its new home, followed by 20/20 (5.2 million, 1.2). Following Fox was NBC, which averaged a 1.5 rating. ABC and CBS tied on the night with a 1.1 with the CW trailing with a 0.7. Iron Man 3 Joins Movie And TV Production Exodus To North Carolina
“The rumors are true,” a North Carolina TV station announced when the governor flew to the hometown movie studio to break the news this past week. “Tony Stark and the third installment of the Iron Man movie franchise will fly into Wilmington.” Great news for North Carolina maybe but for the Los Angeles movie and TV community it felt like a punch in the gut. Thanks to the state’s generous 25% production credit, North Carolina’s EUE/Screen Gems Studios sealed the deal. Manhattan Beach-based Marvel Studios considered making the third movie in Los Angeles just like the first two, but the 25% credit proved too hard to resist. California has a 25% credit which excludes big budget studio productions. Marvel also considered Michigan and New Mexico but North Carolina won out because of the size of the facility as well as the tax credit. “We aggressively pursued this piece of business,” said EUE/Screen Gems Co-Owner and COO Chris Cooney. “We negotiated hard, and it paid off.” EVP Bill Vassar pointed out that in addition to Screen Gems’ 10 sound stages the area has a large local crew base with experience handling five productions simultaneously. Iron Man 3 is expected to pump about $80 million into the local economy. “This is a great day for North Carolina,” Gov. Bev Perdue boasted. Not so great for Los Angeles, though. “Five-hundred-fifty jobs, all the other sub-jobs, the construction jobs, that’s what it’s all about to us here locally.” In addition to Iron Man 3, Perdue cited Hunger Games and a lot of other movies and TV work currently and recently all over North Carolina. “The film tax credit made a real difference.” Too make matters worse, at a time when many other states, not just North Carolina, are aggressively pursuing location shoots, California’s tax credit program was extended after only one year because the Legislature didn’t think the financially strapped state could afford originally proposed five-year version. L.A. wasn’t the only city that got this kind of news recently. NBC Sports announced that it was moving out of its longtime home at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Manhattan about 35 miles away to Stamford, Conn., to take advantage of tax incentives. Connecticut offers tax credits from 10% up to 30% depending on a production’s budget. Iron Man 3, which North Carolina officials say will be the state’s biggest production yet, is expected to set up shop in Wilmington for about 10 months starting after the first of the year.

Immortals Featurette Online
Check out that Henry CavillHe's Zack Snyder's ManOf Steel, but before he dons the blue tights, you can get a taster of Henry Cavill, Action Man, in Immortals. That's the fast-approaching Greek god epic from Tarsem in which he plays the under-dressed but over-achieving Theseus. And here's a featurette all about the character! The film features a war involving the GreekGods - played here by the likes of Luke Evans, Kellan Lutz, Isabel Lucas and Corey Sevier - and a king with ambitions to take over the world, Hyperion (MickeyRourke). Caught in the middle is Freida Pinto's soothsayer Phaedra and, of course,Cavill's demi-god Theseus, chosen to lead the fight back.Immortals is out on November 11. Given that Tarsem made the slightly barmy but utterly ravishing likes of The Cell and (in particular) The Fall before, we're expecting something gorgeous.

Haywire Poster Fights Online
Steven Soderbergh's MMA action epic!Hot on the heels of Contagion comes the other film Steven Soderbergh made this year (not counting his second-unit work on The Hunger Games). Haywire is the action vehicle Soderbergh built around Mixed Martial Arts star Gina Carano. You can't really recognise her in the poster that's just arrived, but it's still pretty damn cool. Although without the gun, the activity she's engaged in here might possibly be misconstrued..."Haywire has a bit of our special sauce in it," Soderbergh told Empire recently. "I'd like to think that even when we make things that are supposed to be straightforwardly entertaining, there are some other aspects that keep them from being disposable. It was great fun, because it required a different skill-set than I'm used to. I hadn't shot fights like this before, so I had to educate myself."Gina is a natural athlete and she really delivered in some brutal fights, but for all that, I think my favourite scene in the movie is a foot-chase in Barcelona. I could watch her run forever. We've also got a very odd little car chase, and some cat-and-mouse in a house where the lights go out. We didn't really have enough money to blow anything up though!"Alongside Carano, Haywire (the movie formerly known as Knockout) stars Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton and Channing Tatum. Lem Dobbs wrote the screenplay, and it's out in the UK on January 20. Contagion arrives on October 21.
HBO Grabs Soderbegh's Liberace Film
Damon and Douglas still attachedSteven Soderbergh's project about the life of OTT musician Liberace has been in development for ages now. But the trajectory of the film has just taken an unexpected direction, with US cable channel spin-off HBO Films stepping up to make it, retaining stars Matt Damon and Michael Douglas.Richard LaGravenese is behind the script, which is now called Behind the Candelabra. The plot, as it has been all along, will chronicle the relationship between the entertainer (Douglas) and his younger live-in lover Scott Thorson (Damon)."This is a story that's going to surprise a lot of people," HBO Films president Len Amato said in a statement picked up by The Hollywood Reporter. "It's funny, heartbreaking and always fascinating, and we are delighted that Jerry (Weintraub) and Steven brought the film to HBO. With Steven at the helm, directing such accomplished actors as Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, this is a dream project for us."It might seem surprising for a film that had long been planned as a cinematic release to suddenly make the move to TV, but Soderbergh seems happy: "From the inception of this project, we've had two priorities: getting it right creatively, and getting as many people as possible to see it." The director plans to kick off shooting next July in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Palm Springs.
The Simpsons Executive Producer Al Jean on How the Show Was Saved
The Simpsons Mmmmm... contract renewal. Things were looking grim a week ago for The Simpsons, as the possibility loomed that a new deal between the voice actors and 20th Century Fox TV might not happen. Now, with a new pact in place and a 24th and 25th season secure, The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean tells TV Guide Magazine that the negotiations had actually been going on for months without resolve. Things began to turn around last week after he and fellow executive producers Matt Groening and James L. Brooks sat down with the stars."I was always cautiously optimistic," Jean says. "I work for Fox but I represent the show, and I love the cast, so I don't get involved until the very end where we say, 'OK there will be a deal or not a deal, it's not up to me but I hope there is.' When we talked to the cast at that point I was very optimistic; it was very clear to me how much they loved the show and how much they wanted to continue to do it."Even though the deals are between 20th Century Fox TV and the actors, Brooks has been known to smooth things between both sides in the past - and his attorney, Sam Fischer, has occasionally stepped in to resolve stalemates during previous standoffs.Jean won't divulge specifics of how this negotiation turned around (the actors had wanted a piece of the show's back-end profits, but 20th Century Fox TV made it clear that wasn't an option), but says, "It's always helpful to have two powerful guys, Jim and Matt; they want the show to continue but want it to be a good show. Their motives are clear."Now, even though it's been speculated that the 25th season might be The Simpsons' last, Jean says there's no reason to believe the show won't continue long beyond that. He also gives some insight into when fans can expect a second Simpsons movie in theaters.TV Guide Magazine: It was a week of uncertainty, but it led up to this being resolved rather quickly. Walk me through what happened. Was there was a moment where you thought maybe this was all over?Al Jean: It was definitely serious in that we would not have been brought back at the same amount the show now costs. Fox had actually come to us months ago with an analysis basically saying, DVD sales are less, foreign revenues are less, and we're a really expensive show. They said, "This is what we have to get the budget down to," and this was shared with the cast some time ago. And it just became public a week ago, and that's when everything turned from a "negotiation" to an "impasse." We got mislabeled by the reporting. One thing that was really untrue, it was never discussed to do just one more year. It was always going to either end, or do at least two more years. In terms of the mortality of the show, I wound up being in a bad car accident on Thursday, although I'm fine. But when you go through that, you're not going, "I'm thinking about the mortality of The Simpsons." You're just glad you're alive. Yeah, there's a chance The Simpsons could have ended, but it didn't, because we value every person's contribution, especially the cast, and we also love the show and want to keep doing it.TV Guide Magazine: The Simpsons renegotiations generally happen in the spring. Why did this all go down right now?Jean: The network said, either we get a deal where we're set, or we will just announce that we're going off the air. We would have prepared an ending for the show, which we still needed time to do, even though it would have been a year from now.TV Guide Magazine: The idea of recasting the roles wasn't an option this time (like it was during an earlier renegotiation more than a decade ago). Why was that not on the table?Jean: Every negotiation I've ever been involved in, it hasn't been an option. These actors are these characters. There's no reason to give people less than what you've grown to love over 23 years.TV Guide Magazine: When these studies started showing up illustrating how News Corp. stood to make even more money once The Simpsons went off the air, did that give you pause at all? Jean: This is one of those things they told us six months ago. This was told to the cast and everyone involved. By the way, I should say there are other budget cuts and have been other budget cuts in the past couple of years because of this. I think the Fox network and the studio, they were really trying to find a way to keep the show going. I believed them when they said the show had gotten too expensive that it no longer made financial sense at the level we were at. But they still loved the show and wanted to continue it.TV Guide Magazine: Even though it might have been more profitable to shut it down?Jean: That was a real debate. It's a big company, and there are definitely people whose interests would have been better served by ending it. Those interests were superceded because we're still valuable to the network in terms of our ratings. We still double our lead-in every Sunday.TV Guide Magazine: Among the budget cuts were a reduction in salary for the producers. Can you talk to where else things were trimmed?Jean: They're all over the budget. We don't like to talk about specific areas or specific people's salaries. But everything involved in the show, from the animation and the post-production to the writing, yes. But this is the world we live in. Everyone involved, especially me, believes this is a terrific place to work. There are so many economic difficulties that people face now, I would never complain about anything we're having to do.TV Guide Magazine: As animation production has changed, were you able to find some efficiencies there?Jean: Digital animation (has helped). There are initial startup costs, but in the long run it's less expensive. I hate to say "cheaper animation" because I think it looks better than it ever has, but in some cases money was saved... With computers you're able to realize different savings as you continue to refine the method. There was a big cost incurred for switching to high def, but now that we're in high def we can realize some savings too.TV Guide Magazine: When Harry Shearer put out his statement on Friday, what was the reaction, and did it help move a deal along?Jean: The only comment I would make is that the actors are very valuable and deserve to participate in the success of the show. I agree with both of those statements. The negotiation determines in what way that happens. We would never do a show without them. I think everyone who has worked here for a while [has] certainly done quite well by The Simpsons, and everyone is grateful for it. We're going to move on now and settle the NBA strike.TV Guide Magazine: Maybe you can resolve Michael C. Hall's contract negotiations for Dexter.Jean: We actually have a little homage to Dexter in our Halloween show coming on October 30. And we're really proud that our Halloween episode airs before Halloween this year.TV Guide Magazine: When the two-year renewal came out, we couldn't help but notice how it brings us right to that nice 25-year number. What is your sense of whether The Simpsons will end after that?Jean: Nobody can predict what the future holds. But the fact that we got the costs down is, in my view, a very big hope that we can continue beyond those two seasons. They never said, "We want to end it." They said, "We want to find a way so that it can continue into the future."TV Guide Magazine: So 30 years?Jean: I'm so optimistic I'm upping it to 50 years now.TV Guide Magazine: You guys are getting close to Gunsmoke's 635-episode record. Is that something to aspire to?Jean: A little bit, but honestly, you don't do this just to break records. You do it because you think you can still do funny shows. We just had a table read of next year's Halloween episode, which went great. You go to these reads and see how funny it is, and the cast being great, and you say to yourself, "This is why we want to keep doing this."TV Guide Magazine: Plus, these days, even when you go off the air, there's opportunity to revive these franchises down the road, like Futurama or Family Guy.Jean: So extrapolating that, we'll be on the air 75 years. Animation is evergreen. I've given up trying to forecast it. I would just say, don't bet against us. We really kill ourselves to try and keep the show funny and current.TV Guide Magazine: Can you really do a final episode of The Simpsons? That seems like a tall order.Jean: We've done episodes of The Simpsons that would have been great final episodes, like the one where Elizabeth Taylor was Maggie's voice in Season Four. But we're not going to say, "Watch this last episode and the meaning of life will be revealed." Sometimes shows put themselves in a box by trying to promise that. We know a lot of things we want our last episode not to be. What we do want it to be is sweet, true to the show and funny.TV Guide Magazine: Is there ever a point where you revisit a spin-off? There hasn't been talk of one since the plans to do a live-action Krusty the Clown show was scrapped in 1994.Jean: That was the only one that got close. In my view, if you start diluting that universe you start losing something.TV Guide Magazine: And now that this is out of the way, we can get back to asking you about a second Simpsons movie.Jean: Oh, come on! I've always been of the view that if we ever did a second movie, which would be exciting, it would be whenever the run of the show ended. So I guess the news is a Simpsons movie has been pushed back another two years at least.TV Guide Magazine: You're always working ahead of the game, keeping some episodes left over for the following year. Had a deal not closed, when would you have run out of fresh episodes?Jean: Season 23 would have been the last recorded season, the new episodes would have aired through December 2012, in accordance with the end of the world according to the Mayan Calendar. I guess we beat the prophecy.Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!

New Academy Museum Could Feature Oscar on its Historic Facade
Double size and half the fundraising event burden.our editor recommendsMotion Picture Academy Takes Answer to Create Museum in Former May Co. Department StoreInside the Oscar Museum's Past Troubles and Uncertain Future People will be the rough metrics in the Academy of motion Picture Arts and Sciences' plan to open a museum inside the former May Co. building round the La County Museum of Art campus -- instead of inside a Hollywood property that the business made the decision to create a $400 million project. The museum could open within three years -- plus it may even come with an picture of Oscar etched round the building's distinctive gold cylinder. It may be operated by AMPAS within extended-term lease agreement with LACMA, according to Academy leader Tom Sherak, who spoke while using Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday. "The fact we don't have this in L.A. -- home of the film -- we must change that," he mentioned. STORY:Inside the Oscar Museum's Past Troubles and Uncertain Future The Academy's board of governors on Tuesday evening grew to become an associate of the LACMA options by tallying to sign a memorandum of understanding to use in good belief to find out a movie museum inside the 300,000-square-ft former mall building, that's situated at 6067 Wilshire Blvd. round the western side of the LACMA campus inside the Miracle Mile district. The memo makes way for your two organizations to talk about the following contract as well as the Academy, which produces the large the majority of its revenue in purchasing broadcast rights for the Oscars show,to develop fundraising event plans. But several questions remain: Sherak did not offer specifics round the terms or entire lease the Academy would sign with LACMA, except to convey, "I won't be around if this lease is finished. In . Even though he did not divulge the thought cost from the project -- that may take as extended as five years to complete -- Sherak mentioned AMPAS "will just raise half of that which you needed to boostInch for your now-scuttled Hollywood museum development on Vine Street. "We are beginning the fundraising event campaign now which determines how rapidly this building increases," mentioned Academy Boss Beginning Hudson. AMPAS would retain autonomy total areas of the museum, while based on LACMA's understanding of museum management and construction, Hudson mentioned. The first sort mall, built-within the Streamline Moderne style, opened up up in 1939 LACMA acquired it in 1994 and re-referred to it as LACMA West. The May Co. structure is famous for that gold cylinder that comprises a few of their facade, that's been designated historic with the city's Cultural Heritage Commission. LACMA Boss Michael Govan mentioned that there's been discussions regarding the potential for integrating the legendary Oscar statuette into the round part of the building's facade. "It absolutely was just screaming being an Oscar," mentioned Govan, adding that might be techniques to change that part of the building "that could be consistent with its historic designation." In line with the La Conservancy, the city's Office of Historic Assets would review any recommended changes for the cylinder. STORY: Film Academy Takes Answer to Create Museum in Former May Co. Mall Despite its new direction, the Academy still expects to spread out exhibition space within the Vine Street property it once imagined as home of a movie museum, though its extended-term plans for your property are unclear. "The primary one factor we won't do -- the Academy will not do as well as the board will not ensure it is accomplished -- we won't abandon this website,In . Sherak mentioned. Nevertheless the new LACMA plan marks a substantial alternation in AMPAS' previous movie museum efforts which is a blow to Hollywood stakeholders who had wanted a movie museum would help in the continuing revitalization in the area. The Academy had extended planned to create a 144,000-square-ft development on Hollywood property it began acquiring in 2005 in the expense up to $50 million. French architect Christian p Portzamparcdesigned a sleek, modern edifice, but merely before a considerable fundraising event campaign may have begun, the project was derailed with the economic collapse that began in serious in fall 2008. The 3.5-acre site, that's situated across from ArcLight Cinemas on Vine, has sitting vacant for several years in August area stakeholders told THR it had become an eyesore. Sherak mentioned the Academystill expects to produce an exhibit space inside the structures to start and there is been discussion about hosting periodic outdoors tests.
